Obituary for Bernhard Otto "Berny" Long

Berny passed away unexpectedly in his 85th year, on March 18th while on vacation in Florida.

He is survived by his three children Catherine, Christine and Karen and his six grandchildren Noah, Caryss, Alex, Jonah, Cole and Adam. He was predeceased by his wife Anne in 2018. Berny was born on August 24, 1937 in Kirkland Lake, Ontario. As a young boy he moved to Port Dalhousie where his mother ran a fruit orchard and his father had an electrical business. He was on the 1948 Lacrosse PeeWee team that won the All-Ontario championships. These ‘old boys’ organized a reunion each year that was a highlight for Berny to attend and to catch up with his teammates.

This year would have marked the 60th Anniversary of his graduation from the University of Waterloo. Berny was in the first class of Electrical Engineering to graduate from U of W in 1963. While in university, Berny
played on the U of W Basketball team. He would often recall the scores of certain important games and even kept his varsity jacket as a memento of this special time.

After graduation he worked for various companies in the Heating and Air Conditioning field and in retirement, followed his interest in real estate and became a Real Estate Broker.

Anne and Berny were married on August 29, 1964 and settled in Hamilton. Berny was a supportive father of his three daughters. He championed them in all their endeavours both professionally and personally. Anne and Berny instilled the love of travelling in their children with many family vacations and annual March Break trips to Florida. Berny was an avid Blue Jays fan and enjoyed watching Spring Training each March in Dunedin while he was in Florida. Berny was a proud charter member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Hamilton, Ontario.

Berny took on the role of full-time caregiver to Anne as she battled illness prior to her death. In doing so, she was able to remain at home which was her wish. He will be sadly missed by his daughters, grandchildren, family and friends.

A Visitation will be held at Smith’s Funeral Home, 1167 Guelph Line, Burlington on Monday, April 3rd from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 1054 Upper Sherman Avenue,
Hamilton on Tuesday, April 4th at 11:00 a.m. with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to Ancaster Community Services would be appreciated as Berny benefitted from their Meals On Wheels program.
