Obituary for Anne Murphy-Turliuk

Murphy-Turliuk, Anne
1958-2022

Peacefully at Margaret’s Place Hospice in Dundas, Ontario on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, in the presence of her family. Wife of Robert Turliuk and mother of Jennifer and Stephen Turliuk. Predeceased by her parents John and Jean Murphy. Survived by a number of overseas cousins in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom.

Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Anne grew up in Stoney Creek and then Burlington, attending Lord Elgin High School, and then on to Western/UWO for her Occupational Therapy training. She was honoured to be part of a group of classmates from her OT ‘80 class that have remained close friends. During her university student years, Anne had many varied jobs including becoming an asphalt roller operator with the City of Burlington as well as a certified windsurfing instructor- among her many summer job activities. After graduation from university she worked in hospital and community OT before expanding this role as a private practitioner- a very new concept in Ontario in the mid to late 1980’s. Anne was active in her provincial organization Ontario Society of Occupational Therapists and she was proud to be part of a group of dedicated OT’s that helped recently establish their role as an integral part of Family Health Teams in Ontario.

Anne was an amazing and wonderful mother, wife, daughter and a cherished friend. Keen on sports, the outdoors, an avid gardener, and a very accomplished sailor (Royal Hamilton Yacht Club, Port Sydney Yacht Club)-she frequently was sought after to skipper or be part of a sailing crew. She was the ultimate team member for any activity she embraced- with the essential knowledge, skills and attitudes- and relevant sense of humour, that were helpful for the planned goals. Anne enjoyed adventures with her family and was expert in the planning of self directed travel.

Anne will be remembered for her hearty laugh, warm smile, elegance, charm, intelligence and most importantly the kindness, support and respect with which she treated everyone around her. Anne served as a mentor to many, encouraging them to proceed into uncharted territories, taking risks along the way to their various goals.

Many thanks to her oncologist Dr. R. Juergens, and the caring, compassionate staff at the Juravinski Cancer Centre. Heartfelt thanks to the expert staff at Margaret’s Place Hospice including Dr. A. Boyle, the RN’s, RPN’s, and PSW’s, who during Anne’s short stay assisted her in transitioning to the next destination in the universe. We thank Anne’s dear friends and relatives, many of those connected with the Caring Village, who stepped up to support Anne and her family in much the same way that she often served others. Anne loved sunsets and was hoping that she could be part of creating our future sunsets during her spiritual and eternal life..

As per her wishes, cremation has taken place. For those wishing to do so, a donation to the Royal Botanical Gardens (www.rbg.ca/donateonline) for a memorial platform lookout spot in Anne’s memory would be appreciated. Or if desired, donations can also be made to Wellwood (www.wellwood.ca) who assisted Anne and her family in her journey.

A Celebration of Life will take place at the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club on Saturday, February 26th 2022 from 3:30-5 pm. Due to Covid-19 restrictions and provincial regulations, only a limited number of guests are able to attend at one time. Proof of double vaccination will be required for entry.
