Obituary for Allan William Lourie

Allan’s very generous heart finally gave out after nearly 95 years of service to his family and loved ones. Born in Outremont, QC, to Victoria Elizabeth (Denman) and George Hutchinson Lourie, he had a beloved sister Bernice (Dobby), predeceased. Allan doted upon his wife of 72 years, Grace (Jackson), being her exceptionally patient caregiver for the past ten years. He was a loving father to his children Susan (Dolliver) and Bruce, and his daughter-in-law Biz Agnew, and was the proudest grandfather ever of his two grandchildren Ellen and Claire, taking a deep interest in their lives and careers.

He was loved by all who knew him for his outstanding sense of humour and endless kindness. He spent his nearly 40 years of retirement living in Burlington, ON where he actively pursued his passions of golf and bridge. He excelled at both, shooting an honest 80 on the golf course on his 80th birthday, a feat that was relatively routine for him.

Allan went to work at Canadian Pacific Railway in Montreal as a teenager following the death of his father in an industrial accident. This tragic event deprived him of an education. After 44 years at CP Rail he retired as a senior executive, becoming one of the few executives who could repair and operate a locomotive. He was a company man in the truest sense of the word. Hardworking and proud of it.

Smart, funny, kind, and oh so patient, Allan lived life as a model citizen. He is missed deeply.

A private service will take place in September. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Wildlife Conservation Society Canada or a charity of your choosing.
