Alice Grace Farmar (nee Day)
July 1, 1917 – May 21, 2021
With sadness we announce Alice Farmar’s passing in her 104th year in Burlington, Ontario. Loving mother of Rob, adored grandmother of Darren, Drew, Julie, Kim and Krista. Great grandmother of Adam, Alicia, Bradley, Elise, Ellie, Grant, Jackson, Landon, Madyson, Paul, Spencer and Trent. Mother-in-law to Judy and Willie. Cherished aunt to Jeff, Brad and Marta. Predeceased by husband Dr. Cecil Farmar, children Donald and Barbara and brothers Grant and Gordon. Alice was treasured by her entire family to which she was lovingly devoted. She will be missed by the countless friends and acquaintances she made over the many decades of life spent in Hamilton and Burlington.
Alice was the first of three children born to Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Day in Hamilton over a century ago. She married her high school sweetheart Dr. Cecil Farmar in 1939 and had three children of her own. Alice was the rock of the family and remembered fondly by her children and grandchildren for her sweet and kind manner, her keen interest in their lives and her wonderful spirit.
Alice had a professional start in bookkeeping but upon marriage, she chose to focus on family and running a household, and her family was the beneficiary. Her children remember numerous bridge games with her club, dance lessons for her kids in the home basement, family summer vacations at the beloved Stanton House on the shores of Sparrow Lake in Port Stanton and her role as a founder, builder and long-serving member at the Port Nelson United Church.
Her grandkids remember listening to Blue Jays games on the back porch (she would score the games as she listened), the end-of-school-year trips to the Holiday Inn in Grand Island N.Y. where they would be rewarded (and spoiled rotten) for passing the school year, and especially the weekend sleepovers at the house on Douglas Ave. where each grandchild would be celebrated in turn.
World travel was a shared interest with her husband and after Cecil’s retirement from Optometry, they embarked on many international journeys, curating souvenirs from trips and cataloguing them into labelled brown boxes. Stories were shared at the dinner table featuring her famous spaghetti and meatballs. Alice was consistently described by those that knew her best as ‘proud’ and ‘classy’ and she worked to keep her mind active and sharp with a never-ending stream of library books, crosswords and word puzzles.
We are very grateful for the compassionate care she received from the wonderful staff at Billings Court Manor in Burlington. They truly made Alice’s final years comfortable and happy and we are eternally grateful to them. A private service will be conducted at Smith’s Funeral Home on Brant Street in Burlington. The service will be recorded and posted to Smith’s website for those that wish to view it.
The service will be broadcast live at 10:30am on Wednesday, May 26th. Please copy and paste the following link into your browser if you wish to view the Funeral Service:
