Smith's Funeral Homes continues to support numerous professional and community organizations. Don Smith has been active in a host of city civic, service, health and athletic organizations, and served as Chairman of the Board of Funeral Services for the Province of Ontario, and was a founding member of the Burlington Bereavement Resource Council.
Smith's has been recognized for service and excellence with the following awards:
- Burlington Chamber of Commerce Heritage Award 2020
- Mayor's Community Service Award in 2013
- First Canadian Funeral Home to be Certified by the Green Burial Council in 2009
- Burlington Chamber of Commerce Business Achievement Award - Service in 2000
- Burlington Chamber of Commerce “Company of the Year Award” in 2000
- Mayor's Community Service Award in 1997
- First Canadian Funeral Home to receive the Pursuit of Excellence Award from the National Funeral Directors Association in 1989
Smith's Funeral Homes was the first Canadian business of its kind to be certified by the Green Burial Council—an independent, non-profit international organization that works to ensure funeral and cemetery practices are eco-friendly and meaningful.
