Obituary for Barry Slater

Barry Slater
SLATER, Barry Michael
One of the last things Barry said was “I’m lucky.” We know he was referring to the steadfast love he shared for 50 years with his cherished wife Marcia Slater (nee Moore) who has cared for him unwaveringly through his life journey. We are thankful for the tender dignity showed to him at the Carpenter Hospice in Burlington where he died on December 8, 2018 at the age of 73. He was born in Hamilton on April 29, 1945.
Barry was surrounded by his family this summer for a grand reunion.  From Amsterdam, the Netherlands daughter Alyson & Leena (Wokeck) with their children Elias & Niclas, son Adam & Jackie (Eveleigh) and their children Logan, Jack, Marley & Jane, and from London, England, daughter Kate & Michael Vance with children Lucy & Sophie.  It was a wonderful month of sharing meals, having adventures and building lasting memories.
His brothers and sisters in the extended Slater and Moore families will miss his leadership and strength of character.  Bill & Judy Slater of Leamington, Lonny & Dennis Gabinet of Calgary, Justices Patrick Moore & Tamarin Dunnet of Mississauga, Suellen & Gerard P. Murphy of Burlington, Barbara & Alex Lawson of Toronto, Nancy & Paul Murphy of Vernon, Mike & Diane Moore of Burlington and Sarah & Rick Machel of Burlington.  Barry valued his wide circle of nieces and nephews and loved to see how all their families have grown over the years.
He was always curious about life, and was an avid reader and follower of current events. Barry was a talented artist who worked in watercolour and was particularly inspired by nature. He was forever pursuing new hobbies. His interest in birds of prey led to his support for the refurbishment of the Raptor Center at the Mountsberg Conservation Area. He also obtained his pilots license, and studied everything from tropical fish to astronomy. Barry joined Russell T. Kelley Advertising Agency in Hamilton in 1963, and went on to work at several large Agencies in Toronto. He learned and loved all aspects of the business working first in the mailroom, then in production, managed big accounts, and held senior executive positions. His creative abilities and business acumen resulted in a successful 40-year career, and a large network of clients and colleagues that he enjoyed so much. Barry was a cancer survivor and did all that he could to share his experiences and support others. This led him to Wellspring in Oakville where he volunteered for 12 years as a peer counselor and assisted with fundraising. In lieu of flowers, a donation in his memory to Wellspring (https://wellspring.ca/birmingham/) or the Carpenter Hospice (https://www.thecarpenterhospice.com) would be deeply appreciated.
A Celebration of his Life will be held on January 5, 2019 at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington, from 1:00 – 4:00 pm where all friends and family are welcome.
