Obituary for LaVerna Catherine Hayes (Robertson)

LaVerna Catherine Hayes (1921-2018) passed away Saturday, August 4, just shy of her 97th birthday. Wife of the late Lionel James Hayes, she was the eldest child of Fanny and William Robertson of Grimsby, Ontario. She was a wonderful big sister and second mother to many of her eight siblings. Predeceased by brothers Ron, James, and Edward, and sisters Audrey, and Sheila, she leaves behind her brother Douglas and sisters Ella and Patricia. A beautiful, strong and accomplished woman, she raised a family of five. She was a strong presence, giving much back to her community. As one of the forces behind the formation of the Womens’ Auxiliary of the Canadian Legion in Grimsby, she acted as its President for some years, as well as holding positions of Vice-President and Treasurer at other times and working hard on their many activities. Not satisfied only with life as a stay-at-home mother, once her children were in school she took university courses to become one of the first certified pre-school educators in Canada, and shortly after that developed her own private facility, Mountainview Nursery School, which for many years gave young Grimsby-area children an excellent start in their education, with a creative and learning-based program for three- and four-year-olds. Grimsby, by the way, was where she was born and lived virtually her whole life; it was the place she loved and enjoyed being involved, not just with her school and the Legion, but also at the Grimsby Hospital and in many other community activities. As a devoted member of St. Phillips Anglican Church, she spent many years singing in the choir, and for several years was pressed into service as their organist and choir director. After St. Phillips was deconsecrated, she returned to the church of her youth, St. Andrews Anglican Church. LaVerna passed on her strength of moral character and her love of and talent for music to her children. She was a greatly loved daughter, big sister, mother to five, grandmother to fourteen, great-grandmother to 26 and great-great grandmother to one. She was appreciated as a wonderful friend to too many to count. She was also loved very much and will be greatly missed by her children and their families: Gail and Edward Bohonos, both passed earlier, children Michael, Daniel and Tricia, George and Rhoda Hayes, daughters Debbie & Nancie, Susan and Robert Drake, children Tom, Honey, John, Barbara & Tyson, Gary and Florence Hayes, sons Devon & Jeff and Christopher Hayes, sons Jesse & Dustin. She was also a much loved aunt to many nieces & nephews in her extended family. As per her wishes, she has been cremated, and a memorial service will be held at St. Andrews Anglican Church, 156 Main Street West, Grimsby on Friday, August 31, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. The family wishes to especially thank her long-time family doctor, Dr. Don Smith, and the wonderful staff at Kilean Lodge Long Term Care.
