Obituary for Shirley Elizabeth Ross

ROSS, Shirley Elizabeth (nee Ham)

Our wonderful mother and grandmother passed away on Thursday, February 8, 2018, with her daughter Lynn by her side, at the Brant Centre Long Term Care Residence in Burlington, Ontario. Beloved wife of the late Donald (2014). Shirley will be greatly missed by her son Don (wife Nelleke Bak) of Ireland, and daughter Lynn Crosby (husband Jeff) and her adored grandchildren Steven and Amy, of Burlington. Predeceased by her sister Catherine Younger, and her parents Alan and Elizabeth (“Billie”) Ham. Born in Winnipeg in 1937, Shirley moved to Toronto in 1964, and Burlington in 1973. Shirley was a wonderful, compassionate lady, whose family meant everything to her. She was proudest and happiest when with her children and grandchildren, and was the best mom and grandma we could have ever had. Shirley was a long time member of the Burlington Golf & Country Club where she enjoyed ladies’ curling and mixed curling with Don and her many friends. She was an avid bridge player and was in many bridge clubs over the years. Sometimes, between the talking, eating and visiting, they played a bit of bridge! Shirley will be remembered for her kind, generous spirit and her genuine concern for other people. She was always there for anyone who needed help and had deep empathy for others - family, friends, or strangers. She had a special place in her heart for children, and even when she was ill, her face would light up when she saw children come to visit the Brant Centre. Thank you to the wonderful staff at the Brant Centre for their many years of kindness and care, especially the staff in Port Nelson and Aldershot areas, and Dr. Christopher Ragonetti. Also thank you to Dr. Adam Grzeslo, her family doctor who cared for her with such compassion. Cremation has taken place. Friends are invited to join the family for a Celebration of Life at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 485 Brant Street (one block North of City Hall), BURLINGTON (905-632-3333), on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer Society or a children’s charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
