Obituary for Rhoda Isabel Francey (Cornell)

Rhoda Isabel Francey (Cornell)
FRANCEY, Rhoda Isabel (nee Cornell)-

With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Rhoda Isabel Francey (nee Cornell) in her 96th year, on Monday, January 22, 2018. Rhoda was the beloved wife of the late Ronald (2014) for 69 wonderful years. Predeceased by her eldest son Dave (2011), and her granddaughter Sabrina (2010). Much loved mom to Jim (Hilary) and Lori Zaw (Tun). Sadly missed by daughter-in-law Lee. Cherished grandma of Michael, Erin (Nate), Ryan, Melanie (Rob), Meagan (Cory), Heather, and Victor (Camilla). Proud great-grandma of Evan, Ben, Jacob, Addison, Henry, Samuel and Elodie. She leaves behind her many nieces and nephews, extended family, friends and neighbours.

Rhoda was born in Brantford to Clara and William on September 2, 1922 and was raised in Hamilton as the youngest of nine children. Rhoda worked at Bell Telephone as a long-distance supervisor, and switchboard operator at the Henderson Hospital. She and Ron made their family home in Hamilton, living briefly in St. Thomas. Wherever Rhoda lived she made good friends and always looked forward to a game of cards. Rhoda enjoyed an energetic lifestyle, playing golf and badminton. She was a charter member of St. John United Church in Hamilton and took an active role in the church community. In their retirement years, Rhoda and Ron loved to travel and spent many summers at their cottage in Southampton. For the last 15 years of her life, Rhoda and Ron resided in Burlington watching their grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow.

Rhoda lived a long and beautiful life, guided by the Golden Rule. A real lady with a curious and sharp mind, independent until the end, Rhoda’s absence will be felt deeply by all.

Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 485 Brant Street, (one block north of City Hall), BURLINGTON, 905-632-3333 on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at 1 p.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home. If desired, donations to the Neurofibromatosis Society of Ontario and Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation would be sincerely appreciated by the family.
