JACQUES, Douglas Derek “Duck” -

Passed away peacefully at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington, on Thursday October 12, 2017 at the age of 59. Loving husband and best friend of Valerie Atkinson for the past 32 years. Proud father of Calum Jacques (girlfriend Laura van Velsen). Cherished son of Charles Wallace Jacques “Wally” and the late Margaret (nee Crawford). Dear brother of Robert Jacques (Susan Muise) and Nancy Cooper. Son-in-law of Betty Atkinson (late Harold Atkinson), and brother-in-law of Fraser Atkinson (Laura), Conrad Atkinson (Sachiko Kubo), and Mark Atkinson (Olga). He will be remembered fondly by his nieces and nephews, his life -long friend Skeeter, and many other friends, colleagues and members of the BCP community. Douglas was a retired teacher with the Halton District School Board and spent his career in Outdoor Education and especially with the Bronte Creek Project. He had attended HSC, Trent University and spent many wonderful summers at Kandalore. He was a member of COEO, and was also an Indigenous Relations Helper with Elders Nancy Rowe and Peter Schuler from Mississauga of the Credit and Elder Larry McCleod from Nipissing First Nation. Doug found his peace and solitude at his cabin on Rock Lake. A passionate leader and visionary who will be missed dearly. Private Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Visitation will be held at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 1167 Guelph Line (one stoplight north of QEW), BURLINGTON, 905-632-3333, on Friday, October 20, 2017 from 5-8pm. A Celebration of Douglas’ Life will be held at the Royal Botanical Gardens (680 Plains Road West, Burlington), on Monday October 23, 2017 at 2:00pm. Please check the funeral home’s website for service information. As an expression of sympathy, donations in his memory to the Royal Botanical Gardens would be sincerely appreciated by the family.
