Obituary for Richard Robert "Dick" Dumberg

RICHARD ROBERT DUMBERG

Richard Robert Dumberg passed away peacefully in Burlington, August 6, 2017. Richard is survived by his most precious Margaret, nee Cassidy, of Toronto. Trusted friend to Scott Lyons of Toronto. Richard emigrated from Latvia with his parents as a youngster, settling in Winnipeg. An only child, Richard moved to Toronto after WWII to study.

Married in 1959, Richard shared everything in a rich and full life with his beloved Margaret. Dick forged a brilliant career in the banking industry through time that spanned over 50 years, five provinces, three countries and the scores of business people Richard’s work touched. As branch manager of the College and Spadina TD Bank, Richard had countless merchant customers whose enterprises he helped foster and grow. If you spoke to Richard on the telephone, invariably the first question he would ask would be ‘How’s business?’ and if you were dealing with Mr. Dumberg, chances were that business was good.

A consummate gentleman in every situation, Dick, as he was known to his friends and associates, seemed in many ways to be a man from a bygone, more genteel, era. Every person who encountered Dick was struck by his impeccable manners, dashing appearance and kind nature. Dick had a sharp, brilliant mind and brilliant blue eyes that could twinkle, as quick was Dick with a joke or good word. Incredibly well informed on current affairs, politics, and technology, Richard was always up to date and while a traditionalist, he remained through his life you at heart and thoroughly modern man.

Richard suffered his entire adult life with ankylosing spondylitis, a degenerative form of arthritis. It lead to Richard’s unmistakable posture due to his vertebra being completely fused from hips to neck, a characteristic of the more sever forms of the disease. You would never hear Richard say a word of complaint about his condition. All that was needed was a positive attitude and a longer shoe-horn to allow for slipping on of the shoes. Richard was not outwardly hindered by the discomfort and inconvenience his illness brought, for he had important work to do, and went about doing it with exemplary competence, determination and aplomb.

We must mention the game of bridge when speaking of Richard Dumberg. Simply we must say he was a lifelong bridge player and through the game he made numerous connections that would carry through his and Margaret’s life. Many lives were touched and families in fact changed and improved somehow, all because of playing with a deck of cards. Richard knew how to play with the cards he was dealt and all who played with him or were touched by him knew their life was somehow a little brighter for it.

Retired from TD Canada Trust, Richard finished his banking career at the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (best known as OSFI), the regulatory body for all banking institutions in Canada.

Lifelong residents of Toronto, Richard and Margaret relocated to Burlington in 2001, where Margaret still resides.

Thank you to the staff of Joseph Brant Hospital for their kind and compassionate care.
