Obituary for Lt. Col. Maxwell Ryan

Lt. Col. Maxwell Ryan
Lt. Col. Maxwell Ryan
July 24,1937-July 1, 2017

Max was promoted to glory on July 1, 2017 at the Joseph Brant hospital in Burlington, Ontario from the effects of Parkinson’s. He will be missed by many but most immediately by Pat, his wife of 58 years and their children Bramwell (Sharon), Geoffrey, Evangeline/Vangi (Jeffery) and Christopher. He is survived by his grandchildren: Aarin, Ben, Emma, Sergei, Sasha, Anya, Aidan, Connor, Jackson, Samuel, Audrey; and by his sisters Shirley Dubois and Laurene (Bill) Haynes.

Max left his home in Cobourg, Ontario for The Salvation Army Training College in Toronto and was ordained as an officer in 1957. Over the next 60 years he ministered as a man of both pulpit and pen. He served in congregational leadership, administration and hospital chaplaincy from Cape Breton to Edmonton, England to Ghana. Perhaps his widest impact was through the printed word. For many years Max worked in Salvation Army publishing in Canada and the UK and at various times as editor-in-chief in both places. He was a published author. From hard hitting editorials to evocative stories of hearts changed, Max knew that the written word can transform lives.

Many thanks to Dr. Adam Grzelo and the wonderful nursing staff on 4-south at “The J”. And our heartfelt gratitude for the active support, encouragement and ministry of Burlington's Salvation Army Community Church.

Visitation at Smith’s Funeral Home, 1167 Guelph Line, Burlington from 7-9 pm on Monday July 10. Funeral will be held at The Salvation Army Burlington Community Church, 2090 Prospect St, Burlington at 10:30 am Tuesday, July 11, 2017. The interment will follow in Cobourg, Ontario at 4:15 pm.

If desired, memorial contributions in support of Dr. Paul Thistle in Zimbabwe would be appreciated. Tax deductible donations can be mailed to TEAM of Canada, #372-16 Midlake Blvd SE, Calgary AB, T2X 2X7. Please indicate on your cheque that the donation is intended for "Karanda Mission Hospital".
