Obituary for Hazel Audrey Wiley (Shuttleworth)

Wiley, Hazel (nee Shuttleworth)

Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at Mount Nemo Christian Nursing Home, in her 83rd year. She had struggled with dementia for several years, and now is enjoying respite in Heaven. Hazel is survived by her dear husband of 60 years, Gerald (Gerry) Wiley, her two sons Dean (Marylin) and Blair (Melanee) Wiley, grandchildren Sara, Ryan, Bailey, Brooke, and Cameron Wiley, and Great granddaughter Isabella. Her sister Ruth Bumphrey resides in Duncan, B.C.

Hazel was born and raised in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. She came to Deep River, Ontario to work in the hospital in 1956 and soon became engaged to Gerry. They were wed in Moose Jaw, August 24, 1957. In 1963 the family moved to Ancaster. In 1976, they moved to Oakville, and in 1987 to Burlington.

Hazel's cheerful, compassionate manner won her many strong friendships. She was an active person who loved dancing, walking, golfing, camping, traveling, and theatre. She also knitted, quilted, tailored and collected original paintings. She practiced and taught Taoist Tai Chi in Burlington. Besides golf trips in Canada and the USA, she visited every province in Canada and the Yukon. As soon as she retired she vacationed with Gerry (in order): Portugal, Fiji, New Zealand and Australia, Spain, Scotland (twice!), Ireland, England, China, Egypt, Greece, Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes, Crete and Turkey. They cruised to Panama and saw Aruba, Costa Rica, Cayman and Trinidad. Their last cruise was to the Hawaiian Islands.

Hazel was an active member of St. Stephen United Church. Thanks to the members there for their prayers and good wishes. We also that the staff of Acclaim Day Program for their valuable care and encouragement. A special thanks to the caring staff at Mount Nemo Christian Nursing Home for over 2 years of loving attention. Cremation has taken place.
