Obituary for Kalervo Ilmari "Karl" Kinanen

Kalervo Ilmari "Karl"  Kinanen
Kinanen, Kalervo Ilmari “Karl”-
Athlete, Scholar & Gentleman died peacefully at Wentworth Lodge on May 19th. 2017 in his 90th year. Cherished husband of Beatrice Kemp and loving father of Marketta (Oiva) Korpimaki, Sweden. Karl will also be sadly missed by family in Finland, his sister, Hellevi, brothers, Raimo & Reijo and several nieces and nephews. He will be fondly remembered by his in laws, Jack Kemp, Patricia Muise, Helen & Ron Crooker, Josie Kemp, Rose Mary & Norm Westbury, Barbara & John Sharpe, Nancy & Brian May, Tom & Teresa Kemp, Mark & Kay Kemp and many nieces and nephews. Karl will also be mourned by his devoted caregiver, Elmer Crisostomo.

Born in Finland, Karl immigrated to Canada as a young man working as a labourer & studying at U.B.C. He taught at McMaster University for over 25 years, in Social Work and Gerontological studies which he is credited with helping establish. Through his thoughtful and encouraging counsel, Karl enriched lives and inspired many to believe in themselves and their goals.

Athletic from a young age, Karl was active in track and field as well as cross country skiing, a lifelong passion. He skied competitively at the Masters level into his eighties winning local, national & international championships. He taught many friends and colleagues to cross country ski instilling in them enthusiasm for the sport.

Karl will be remembered for his athleticism, kindness, and gentle unassuming nature. Please join us in remembering and honouring Karl at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 1167 Guelph Line, (one stoplight north of QEW) BURLINGTON, 905-632-3333, on Thursday, June 1st. 2017. Visitation with family from 12noon until Celebration of Life Service at 1.00 p.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home.
