Obituary for Denis Murphy

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Denis Murphy (after a short illness) at the Chartwell Brant Long Term Care Residence, on Friday 21st April, 2017 at approximately 11:10 am. He was in his 87th year. In his last year he suffered progressively from the effects of Alzheimer’s. He was predeceased by his wife Doreen and his sister Edna (Parry). Survived by his son, Leslie, daughter in law Susan and grandchildren (mother Nancy Murphy) Christopher (partner Ann-Marie), Andrea and David and great grandchildren Keenan, Sean and Kristen. Denis started his Ballroom Dancing career as a teenager, dancing with his elder sister Edna, winning the ‘North of England Amateur Championship’ and representing the UK (successfully) in three team matches in Europe against Denmark. He later married Doreen and opened a dance studio in Oakfields, Liverpool, England. They became ‘Lancashire & Cheshire Professional Champions’. In 1967 they (together with their son Leslie), emigrated to Canada. They became ‘Members’ and .Fellows’ of the Canadian Dance Teachers Association and taught primarily in Toronto and Hamilton areas and Lectured and Adjudicated throughout North America. Denis was also recognized as an ‘International Adjudicator’ by the World Dance Council. Denis retired fully in late 2016 at age 86. Loved and respected by all he came in contact with. He will be missed by his family and his many friends and students. Visitation will be held at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 485 Brant Street (one block north of City Hall), BURLINGTON, 905-632-3333, on Friday, April 28th, 2017 from 12 noon until the Service of Remembrance which will begin at 1p.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home. If desired, donations in Denis’ memory to the Alzheimer Society would be sincerely appreciated by the family.
