A few of my memories of Les

I first met Les in 1957, when he was Scoutmaster of First Burlington Scout Troop, and I was a young recruit. Les was a rigid disciplinarian. Our uniforms had to stand up to a rigid inspection, we learned to march in perfect step for parades, and our horseshoe had to be perfectly formed. There was no talking out of turn and the flag had to be perfectly rolled and unfurled. All of this education was conducted with good humour and kindness. From Les we learned the essential life lessons of discipline, and respect - for authority, for others, for nature and for ourselves. He took us on great camping trips where we learned to cope with, and enjoy nature. All of us had the greatest admiration, and respect for Scouter Armstrong. I next encountered Les at the Burlington Power and Sail Squadron in the 1980's where he provided leadership and more training experiences. We have been in contact ever since as a result of common interests in sailing, and history - often through his lectures, and newsletters. One example is that for a few years he organized a "Shellbacks" lunch for sailors to get together once a month and share stories. Most recently, I have had the privilege to serve under Les in his role as President of Friends of Freeman Station, and work with him on the saving and restoration of this historic building. As always his insight and guidance have been instrumental in undertaking this worthy project. Les had an encyclopedic knowledge of local history and was always willing to share it for the benefti of others. I recall him at St. Lukes Church a few years ago (at Doors Open), conducting tours of the historic graveyard. I am but one of the countless people Les has touched over the years through his great community spirit asnd desire to help others. He is missed and fondly remembered. Unfortunately Marie and I will not be able to attend his funeral as we are presently in Florida. We offer sincere condolences to Peggy, Wally, Leslie, Russel, and the rest of the Armstrong family.
