Joan Barnard

Funeral Director Associate

Joan was born in Chicago, Illinois and moved to Burlington in 1955.  Joan is an alumna of Burlington Central Public and Burlington Central High Schools, and a graduate of Ryerson University and Sheridan College.  She worked in fashion retail management before beginning her 22-year career at Ashland Canada Corporation, and has been working part time at Smith’s since 2001.  Joan has also been serving on the Board of Directors for her Condominium Complex for many years.

 

Sue Beck

Funeral Director Associate

Sue was born in Hamilton and grew up in southwestern Ontario before returning to Burlington in 1984.  She graduated from Brescia College at the University of Western Ontario in London.  Sue has worked with the funeral service profession for over 20 years in the regulatory field before joining Smith's in February 2017.

 

Adam Brodie

Funeral Director

Adam was born and raised in Burlington and currently resides in Grimsby.  He is a graduate of Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School in Burlington, and became a licensed funeral director in 2003 after graduating from the Funeral Service Education program at Humber College.  Adam joined Smith’s as a co-op student in 2000, and has worked here ever since.

 

Sabrina Brodie

Funeral Director

Sabrina was born in Nova Scotia and moved to the Grimsby area 15 years ago.  She began a high school co-op placement at Stonehouse-Whitcomb Funeral Home prior to her graduation from Beamsville District Secondary School in 2003.  It was this experience that confirmed her intuition that she wanted to pursue an honourable career in Funeral Services.  After high school, she enrolled in the Funeral Service Education program at Humber College,  graduated and became a licensed Funeral Director after completing her internship at Smith's in 2005. She is a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Grimsby and is a volunteer soccer coach for Grimsby Town Youth Soccer Club.

 

Deborah (Deb) Burford

Accounting & Administration

Born and raised in Burlington, Deb graduated from Aldershot High School before moving on to Sheridan College where she received her diploma in Medical Library Techniques.  She has worked for Smith’s for the past 25 years, and is an active member of West Plains United Church in Aldershot.

 

Angela Busnarda

Funeral Director

Angela grew up in Grimsby and graduated from Blessed Trinity Catholic High School before attending Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, BC and Humber College where she graduated from the Funeral Service Education program.  She has worked in the funeral industry for 8 years, and has been part of the Smith’s team since 2010.  Angela has been a volunteer with West Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Grimsby and the Burlington Youth Soccer Club – Timbits Soccer, and is currently involved in the Lincoln Soccer Club.  She is also a member of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Grimsby.

 

John Cowan

Funeral Director Associate

John was born and raised in Hamilton and has resided in Ancaster since 1985.  He worked for the Provincial Ministry of Transportation for 28 years as a Manager and Provincial Offences Officer before retiring and joining the Smith’s team in February 2017.  John also volunteers as a tour guide with the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Mount Hope, home of the restored (and still flying) Avro Lancaster Bomber.

 

Michael Cuberovic

Funeral Director Associate

Michael was born in Belgrade (former Yugoslavia) and immigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba when he was a young child.  He spent his teenage years in Hamilton, Ontario and returned to Hamilton in 1989, where he continues to reside.  He is a graduate of Sir Allan MacNab Secondary School and attended Durham College in Oshawa for the Aviation Transport Technology program.  Mike has trained with the Department of Transport – Air Traffic Services Branch, Peninsula Air Services Ltd. and was a private pilot for 22 years.  He has worked for the Department of National Defense (Infantry), and was in the airline industry for over 32 years.  Michael is an active member of the Hugh Murray Lodge #602 A.F. & A.M.  He is a past member of the Keep Hamilton Clean Committee, past member of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders of Canada (P.L.) Regiment Pipes and Drums Band, and former member of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets.

 

Kathleen Dubeau

Funeral Director Associate

Kathleen grew up in Toronto and moved to Burlington in 1969.  She attended North Toronto Collegiate and Ryerson University, and has worked at Smith’s on and off since 1990.  Kathleen has also worked for VON Halton and Co-operators Insurance.  She is a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Burlington Central Rotary Club and is a former volunteer with Joseph Brant Hospital. 

 

Amy Elvikis

Funeral Director

Amy grew up in Port Dover, Ontario and recently made the move to Burlington.  She attended the University of Ottawa for Psychology and French, and is a graduate of Fanshawe College’s Business Accounting Program.  Amy also completed a Norfolk County Human Resources Internship and participated in the International Student Exchange (I.S.E.) which took her to Châlons-en-Champagne, France. In 2014, Amy graduated from the Funeral Service Education program at Humber College as a licensed funeral director.

 

Stephen Evanetz

Funeral Director

Born and raised in Burlington, Steve attended M.M. Robinson High School and began working at Smith’s after his co-op placement in 1995.  Steve went on to attend Humber College in Toronto, and graduated from its Funeral Service Education program as a licensed funeral director in 1997.   Steve is a member of the Men’s Group at the Ukrainian National Federation of Hamilton, St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Hamilton, and a member of the baseball and dodgeball leagues at Average Joe Sports Club in Burlington.

 

Amanda Furlong

At-Need Administrator and Receptionist

Amanda was born and raised in Burlington, and started at Smith's in 2015.  She graduated from Sheridan College in 2010 with a Travel and Tourism Diploma and is currently continuing her education at Mohawk College.  For the past 10 years, Amanda has worked in various customer service roles, most recently working aboard a cruise ship travelling all over the world. 

 

Edward Gale

Funeral Director Associate

Ed was born and raised in Liverpool, England.  He has been a resident of Burlington for over 30 years, and is a retired police officer having served with the police in both Liverpool, England and the Peel Regional Police, Canada.  Ed is an avid supporter of Everton Football Club.

 

Joseph Gebel

Funeral Director Associate

Joe is a lifelong resident of Hamilton, and is a graduate of St. Lawrence Elementary School, Cathedral High School, the University of Toronto and Hamilton Teachers College.  He earned his Masters of Education and worked for the Hamilton Wentworth Catholic District School Board for 33 years prior to his retirement in 2003.  Joe is a member of the Parish Council Executive, Incarnation Parish in Hamilton, and he and his wife are commissioned Eucharist Ministers.

 

Jennifer Gilbert

Funeral Director

Jenn was born and raised in Brantford, Ontario.  After moving to London in 1998 to pursue a career in Costume Design, she spent over 8 years building costumes for the Stratford Shakespearean Festival.   In 2011, Jenn graduated from the Funeral Service Education program at Humber College as a licensed funeral director.  She joined the Smith’s team in 2012, and has been an active volunteer of fundraising and community events including the Bowl for Kids Sake in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hamilton & Burlington and the Amazing Bed Race in support of Joseph Brant Hospital.  Jenn is a lifetime member of Farringdon Independent Church in Brantford and is proud to support the communities in which she lives and works.

 

Taylor Graham

At-Need & Preneed Administrator/Receptionist

Taylor was born in Hamilton and raised in Burlington, where she continues to reside.  She attended M.M. Robinson High School before attending Trent University and graduating in 2016.  We proudly welcomed Taylor to the Smith’s team in June 2016.

 

Anita Gualdieri

Funeral Director

Anita grew up in Ontario and Quebec, and moved to Burlington in 2015.  As a young adult, she began a career in the hospitality industry and enjoyed working and living at hotels and resorts across Canada.  She was then drawn to funeral service and became a Licensed Funeral Director in 2011.  Anita is a member of St. Paul the Apostle Parish, and is excited to be setting down roots and becoming part of the Burlington community.  Anita joined the team at Smith’s in May 2016.

 

Patricia (Pat) Harber

Reception & Administrative Support ~ Stonehouse-Whitcomb Chapel

Pat grew up in Toronto and moved to Grimsby in 2003 with her family.  She attended Humber College for Recreational Leadership and spent 21 years working for Bell Canada.  Pat is a member of the West Lincoln Memorial Auxiliary as Treasurer Support and is School Council Treasurer at Blessed Trinity Catholic Secondary School.  Pat has worked with us at our Stonehouse-Whitcomb Chapel in Grimsby since 2011.

 

Jeanette Honig

Funeral Director Associate

Jeanette was born and raised in Oakville, Ontario and moved to Grimsby in 2008.  In her youth, she found her calling to help others and began working with individuals suffering from physical and mental challenges.  This journey led Jeanette into a career with the Halton Board of Education, working with youth experiencing emotional and educational difficulties.  Part of the Smith’s team since 2007, Jeanette has continued to embrace bringing love into the community with support and understanding during times of grief.  Jeanette has recently become a Wedding and Funeral Celebrant, and is a proud Mom to two grown children and a loving Oma to six grandchildren.  Jeanette continues to be committed to her passions and career by being a support for those in need.

 

Vernon (Vern) Jones

Funeral Director Associate

Born in Hamilton, Vern has lived in Burlington since 1959 and has worked for Smith’s since 1991.  His 30-year career was spent at Gulf Oil Canada (Petro Canada), before retiring in 1989.  He is an active member of the Mainway Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Burlington, where Vern is a volunteer minister.

 

David Kennett

Funeral Director Associate

Born and raised in Dundas, David has lived in Ancaster since 1988.  He attended Dundas District High School and is a graduate of McMaster University with a Bachelor of Commerce, and Mohawk College with a certificate in Human Resource Management.  David has 30 years of experience working in the field of Human Resources as a Human Resources Advisor with St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hamilton, and with the Province of Ontario.  David is the charity campaign coordinator for the Hamilton Human Resources Office for Federated Health and United Way, and is a member of Ryerson United Church in Ancaster.

 

Jennifer Koens

Funeral Director

Originally from Dundas, Ontario, Jennifer has been a resident of Mount Hope for the past 14 years.  She completed her Humber College internship with Smith’s Funeral Homes in the Funeral Service Education Program, graduating in July 2015 as a Licensed Funeral Director.  She is a proud supporter of The Carpenteros and Friends mission group (Christian Reformed World Relief Committee), Toronto Sick Kids Hospital, and CityKidz Hamilton.  Jennifer is a Member of Hamilton Calvin Christian School and Glanbrook Minor Hockey League Association, and is committed to serving you with Smith’s excellence in values and support.

 

R. Douglas Lampman

Funeral Director Associate

Doug has lived in Burlington since 1971.  He has an Honours B.A. from McMaster University, a Masters of Education from the University of Toronto/Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, and has completed a number of special education and library courses.  Doug spent 32 years with the Halton Board of Education working with students from grades 1 to 12 in Special Education Classes, in the library, and as a Guidance and Alternative Education Counsellor.  Doug was also a volunteer with Burlington Telecare for several years.

 

Diana Malda

Funeral Director

Diana was born in Calgary and raised in Burlington, where she continues to reside with her family.  She attended Guido de Brès High School and worked briefly in her family’s candy business prior to going into funeral service in 1997.  Di went on to graduate from Humber College’s Funeral Service Education program and both apprenticed and worked as a funeral director in Toronto before joining the Smith’s team in 2003.  She is a member of Fellowship Church in Burlington and is a Parent Representative at Trinity Christian School in Burlington.

Bryan McFarlane

Bryan was born and raised in Freelton, Ontario where he continues to reside.  He attended Waterdown High School and joined with Smith’s team in 2010.  Bryan is a former volunteer of the Burlington Humane Society and the Burlington Association for the Intellectually Handicapped (Community Living Burlington), and is actively involved in the Waterdown Men’s Industrial Bowling League.

 

Liz Nason

Preplanning Funeral Director

A lifelong resident of Hamilton, Liz graduated from McMaster University with a BA in psychology and worked in the social services sector for many years.  After raising her two children, she attended Humber College and graduated from the Funeral Service Education program as a Licensed Funeral Director in 2012.  With much experience in the industry, she brings a wealth of knowledge and understanding to the Smith’s team, specializing in assisting families with the important task of preplanning their final wishes.  Liz is a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hamilton and is an active volunteer with the Ontario Association of Cemetery and Funeral Professionals (OACFP) and a passionate supporter of the Unforgettables Fund.  Liz is committed to serving families with compassion and service excellence.

 

Michael Palmer

Preplanning Funeral Director

Born in Hamilton and raised in Dunnville, Michael graduated from Dunnville Secondary School before attending Mohawk College for Construction Engineering Technology.  In 2004, he made the decision to go into funeral service, and graduated from Humber College’s Funeral Service Education program in 2005 as a licensed funeral director.  With a passion for helping families ahead of time, Michael joined the Smith’s team as a preplanning funeral director in 2008.  Michael currently resides in St. Catharines and is a member of the Amity Lodge A.F. & A.M. No. 32.  He is also actively involved with Central Gospel Church in St. Catharines, and was assistant coach for the St. Catharines Concord Soccer Club in 2013.

 

Holden Patteson

Funeral Director

Holden was born and raised in Burlington, where he continues to reside.  He is a graduate of Assumption Catholic Secondary School and Brock University, receiving a BA in English and Philosophy. After the sudden death of his father, Holden decided to become a funeral director and enrolled in Humber College’s Funeral Service Education Program.  He graduated as a Licensed Funeral Director in 2013 and joined the Smith’s staff in 2015.  Holden enjoys writing and playing music in his spare time.

 

Lori Ponsen

Funeral Director Associate

Lori grew up in Southwestern Ontario and migrated to Eastern Ontario before moving to Grimsby in 2011.  Lori has a Bachelor of Education from Redeemer University College in Ancaster and Calvin College in Michigan.  She has worked as an elementary teacher, a choral conductor, a piano accompanist and then operated a cleaning business that served senior citizens and people with special needs.  Lori has worked with Welcome Wagon as the Birth of Baby representative for the Hamilton region, and she is an active member of the Right to Life organization.  Lori has been with Smith’s since 2012, and is a member of Fruitland Christian Reformed Church where her husband is the Pastor and she is a piano accompanist and worship leader.

 

Karen Post

Funeral Director Associate

Karen was born and raised in Oakville and moved to the Niagara Region in 2003.  Having run her own bakery for many years, Karen returned to Niagara College and graduated from the Event Management Program in 2013.  She founded and coordinates the West Lincoln Terry Fox Run every year in September, and joined the team at Smith’s in April 2016.  Karen likes to keep herself busy watching her son in minor hockey, creating stained glass art and enjoying her three dogs.

 

Jennifer (Jen) Rayworth

Administrative Coordinator

Born and raised in Burlington, Jen graduated from Aldershot High School before attending McMaster University for Sociology and Social Work.  Jen is a past volunteer at Joseph Brant Hospital, the Canadian Cancer Society, and the Burlington Downtown Business Association.  She was a member of Breast Cancer Support Services’ yearly ‘The Event’ gala fundraising committee from 2011-2015, and in 2013 was a committee member for the inaugural concert fundraiser ‘This Magic Moment’ in support of the Halton Heroes Foundation.  She is a member of the Ontario Funeral Service Association, the Golden Key International Honour Society, 100 Women Who Care (Burlington Chapter) and is Chair of the Advisory Committee and a Board Member of Guaranteed Funeral Deposits of Canada.  Jen joined Smith’s in 1994 as a co-op student, and has worked in numerous roles ever since.

 

Alan Read

Funeral Director Associate

Alan grew up in Toronto and moved to Burlington in 1998.  He obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Economics) from the University of Toronto, and then completed his MBA in HR and Marketing at York University.  Alan worked in various roles for British American Oil/Gulf Canada/Petro-Canada for 41 years, and he is a Canadian Registered Safety Professional and an Accredited Safety Auditor.  Alan is President of the St. Vincent de Paul Conference and a member of the Social Committee at St. Paul the Apostle Parish in Burlington; he is also a member of the Knights of Columbus and of the Oakville Child/Youth Networking Committee.  Alan has been a member of the Smith’s team since 2010.

 

George Robertson

Operations Manager

George was born in Mississauga and raised in Burlington, and is a graduate of Aldershot High School.  He began working part time at Smith’s in 1982, and in 1984 graduated as a licensed funeral director from the Funeral Service Education program at Humber College.  George celebrated 30 years of service with Smith’s in 2012, and was the Charter Vice-President of the Rotary Club of Burlington North.

 

Raymond Robinson

Preplanning Funeral Director

Ray was born and raised in Langton, Ontario and moved to Burlington in 1964.  Ray is a graduate of the Canadian School of Embalming, and in 2012 received the Legacy Award in Funeral Service to commemorate his 50th anniversary of becoming a licensed funeral director in Ontario.  2014 will mark Ray’s 50th year with Smith’s – a milestone we are proud to celebrate!  Ray is a former Chairman of the Investment Committee and Board Member of Guaranteed Funeral Deposits of Canada, a former President and Board Member of the Burlington Bereavement Resource Council, and is a longtime member of Burlington Baptist Church.

 

Ben Rotsma

Funeral Director Associate

Ben grew up in Burlington before moving to Waterdown in 2005.  Ben is a graduate of Burlington Central High School, a graduate of the Ontario Fire College with a Diploma in Fire Prevention Technology, and a graduate of the Mohawk College Fire Safety Certificate Program.  Ben joined Smith’s upon his retirement from the City of Burlington Fire Department in 2011, after over 30 years of service in various roles including dispatch, fire suppression, fire prevention, public education and media relations.  Ben and his wife coordinate a community meal program in the Aldershot area.

 

J.J. Michael Saunders

Funeral Director Associate

Michael was born in Hamilton and currently resides in Stoney Creek.  Michael is a retired Fire Fighter for the City of Hamilton, and joined the Smith’s team in 2009.

 

Ellen Sinclair

Funeral Director Associate

Ellen grew up in the rocky mountains of British Columbia and moved to Calgary, Alberta where she attended college and graduated as a Personal Support Worker in 1997.  Shortly after Ellen and her husband Jerrod were married in 2001 they moved to his hometown of Cambridge, Ontario where she worked in long term care until 2016.  She then joined the Smith’s team as a Funeral Director Associate, to further continue her love of helping others and working in the community.

 

Dana Smith

Funeral Director

Born in London, Ontario, Dana grew up in Brooklin, Ontario and moved to Burlington over 10 years ago.  She has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Ontario, a Human Resources Certificate from Mohawk College and completed her internship at Smith's for the Funeral Service Education program at Humber College.  Dana joined Smith’s in 2012, and proudly graduated as a Licensed Funeral Director in August 2015.  She has been a volunteer with The Jennifer Ashleigh Children’s Charity since 1998 and a member of the Rotary Club of Burlington since September 2012.

 

Donald James “Jamie” Smith

Funeral Director Associate

Growing up in Galt, Ontario, Jamie moved to in Burlington 1986.  He is a graduate of Mohawk College and the University of Toronto – Canadian Credit Institute.  Jamie’s career was spent as a National Credit Manager and he joined the staff of Smith’s in 2012.  Jamie is a past member of Aldershot Slow Pitch and a current member of the Bronte Harbour Yacht Club.

 

Wendy Smith

Operations Assistant

Wendy was born and raised in Oakville and is a graduate of Gordon E. Perdue High School.  She attended Bruno’s School of Hair Design in Toronto and after graduating in 1972, moved to Burlington where she owned and operated Hampshire House Hair Salon until her retirement in 2003.  Wendy added a secondary career in 1996 with the development of Wendy and Barb Low Fat Inc.  She authored three low-fat cookbooks and created the low-fat food line “Skinny Dips” before joining the Smith’s team in 2000.

 

Lois Smith (Roberts)

At Need Administrator & Assistant Accounting Clerk

Lois was born and raised in Hamilton.  She moved to Burlington in 1986 and joined the team at Smith’s in 2001.  Lois has previously worked in churches, government offices and doctor’s offices in a variety of administrative roles.  She has a love for music and has taught piano for many years.  She also shares her musical talents with Smith’s, playing the organ and piano whenever required.

 

Tina Snow-Ross

Accounting & Administration Clerk

Tina was born and raised in Carbonear, Newfoundland and moved to her current hometown of Dundas, Ontario over 15 years ago.  In 1986, she was the proud recipient of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award.   Tina has a background in accounting, business law and art history and worked in media/publishing before joining Smith’s in 2010.

 

Emily Sumpter

At-Need & Preneed Administrator/Receptionist

Born and raised in Burlington, Emily graduated from Nelson High School before continuing her studies at McMaster University where she completed an Honours B.A. and M.A. degree in classics.  In her spare time she enjoys learning languages and spending time with her pets.  Emily joined the Smith’s team in 2017.

 

Paige Taugher

Funeral Director

Paige was raised in Waterdown, where she continues to reside with her family.  She is a graduate of Waterdown High School and the University of Guelph.  Paige completed several co-op placements during her studies at Guelph, which facilitated her interest in pursuing a career as a Funeral Director.  Upon graduating with a BASc from Guelph in 2013, she began her studies at Humber College in the Funeral Service Education program.  Paige joined Smith's in 2014 and graduated as a Licensed Funeral Director in August 2015.

 

Dan Thompson

Funeral Director Associate

Dan was born, raised and educated in Glasgow, Scotland.  He immigrated to Hamilton, Ontario in 1966, and moved to Burlington in 1970.  His 33-year career was spent at Stelco in Hamilton in accounting, marketing and operations planning, until his retirement in 1999.  In 1995, Dan retired as the Canadian Cancer Society’s Regional President for Southwestern Ontario, having volunteered with the Society for 15 years.  Dan has been part of the Smith’s team since 2004, and is actively involved in The Salvation Army Church in Burlington; he has been part of many mission trips to the Caribbean, building and renovating various Salvation Army facilities.

 

Sean Thomson

Funeral Director/Funeral Operations Supervisor

Sean grew up in Orillia, Ontario and attended Orillia District Collegiate and Vocational Institute before graduating from the Funeral Service Education program at Humber College in 1989.  Starting his funeral service career at Doolittle Funeral Home in Orillia in 1986, Sean moved to Burlington and joined the Smith’s team in 1991. Married with a daughter in her last year of her masters degree,  Sean was a longtime volunteer with the Halton District School Board mainly with the Breakfast Program at Aldershot  School.

 

Justin Tombs

Funeral Director Associate

Justin was born, raised and educated in Hamilton.  He graduated from Saltfleet Secondary School and recently completed both his B.A. and M.A. in Religious Studies at McMaster University.  He is an active member of his church community, The Meeting House in Ancaster, and Smith’s was pleased to welcome him to the team in May of 2015.

 

Victoria Vukovich

Funeral Director

Victoria was born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario. She lived in Waterloo for four years while she obtained an Honours Sociology degree at Wilfrid Laurier University.  Throughout her time at university, her interest in funeral services grew.  She graduated from Humber College in the Funeral Service Education Program as a licensed Funeral Director in 2016, and joined the Smith’s team as an intern in 2015.  In her spare time, Victoria enjoys listening to live music and spending time with family and friends.

 

Sandra Kelter Watt

Funeral Director Associate

Sandi moved to Burlington at the age of 8, and continues to call Burlington home.  She graduated from Burlington Central High School and went on to McMaster University to obtain a degree in English and Psychology.  She then graduated from Hamilton Teachers’ College, and during her career, Sandi earned additional certification as a Teacher-Librarian Specialist and Special Education Specialist.  Sandi was an educator for 32 years with the Halton Board of Education before retiring and then joining Smith’s in 2000.  She is a long-time baton coach in Burlington and has been involved with sport administration for the Canadian Baton Twirling Federation at the provincial, national and international level for many years.

 

David Whyte

Operations Manager

David was born and raised in Burlington and graduated from Aldershot High School before completing the Funeral Service Education program at Humber College in 1989.  Dave joined Smith’s working part time in 1982 until he became a fulltime licensed funeral director in 1989.  In 2012, Dave celebrated 30 years of service with Smith’s.  He is an active member of the Burlington Oldtimers’ Hockey Club and the Burlington Executives Network, and is a former Advisory Board Member of the Ron Edwards YMCA in Burlington.

 

Geoff Willis

Managing Funeral Director ~ Stonehouse-Whitcomb Chapel

Geoff was born and raised in Smithville, where he continues to reside.  He attended South Lincoln High School and went on to graduate from Humber College’s Funeral Service Education program in 1992 as a licensed funeral director.  Geoff joined the Smith’s team in 2003, and is an active member of Grimsby Rotary at Noon and a coach with the West Lincoln Minor Hockey Association.
